Abstract:
Today, business is changing rapidly due to high competition. Many organizations need to adapt and
develop in order to cope with changes from the external environment. The objective of this research
is to study the change management process, methodology for solving problems and the role of
corporate culture in the change program of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). A qualitative
study is conducted in which eleven interviews with employees from three SMEs were undertaken.
The interview questions were developed by using change management concept from previous
studied of large firms. Furthermore, the organization culture concepts from R.Harrison including
Support - Oriented Culture, Achievement - Oriented Culture, Role - Oriented Culture and Power Oriented
Culture are applied to this research in order to examine patterns of corporate culture and
how the concepts supported change management program in Small and Medium enterprises.
The results of the study indicated that small and medium enterprise successfully applied the concept
of change management to improve working processes and organizations structure. Change
Management Process which is categorized into planning state and executing stage according to the
research framework is consistent with every activities of change program for example goal setting,
making an action plan, change communication and planning ways to involve people. Moreover, the
results of this research revealed that the culture of the SMRs organization conform to Support Oriented
Culture regarding to R.Harrison framework. Small and medium enterprises have higher
mobility in the organizational changes because the organization has a small number of members and
the organization structure is not complicated compared with large enterprises.
In conclusion, this research suggested that change management process and corporate culture are
played an important role for change program in Small and Medium enterprise. However,
organizations need to adapt change management concept and change management process from
research framework to fit with organization culture and resources such as communications planning.
Public policy changes clearly and use of information technology to store data in order to change
organization with efficiency and effectively.
