Abstract:
Alcohol use in college students and factors associated are well studied in many countries, but less is known in Bhutan. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determine factors associated with alcohol use behaviors among college students in Bhutan.
A cross-sectional study was used. College students attending in the academic year of 2019 from 4 colleges in Bhutan were the study sample. A simple random method was used for selecting samples after getting the list of students attending in selected colleges. Questionnaires was developed and detected its validity and reliability before use for data collection. Participants characteristics and behaviors related to alcohol use were collected by self-administration after obtaining informed consent form. Chi-square and logistic regression were used to detect the associations between variables at the significant level of α=0.05.
A total of 432 college students were recruited into the study; 62.0% were females, 55.79% were aged 21-24 years, 40.74 % attended the third year, and 79.86 % were living in college dormitories. The prevalence of alcohol use was 78.00% for lifetime drinking, 51.62 % for current drinking and 19.44 % for binge drinking. In the multivariate analysis, low income, those students who did not use tobacco and who had close friends who did not use alcohol were associated with life time drinking and current drinking. While, high income, tobacco use, parents drinking and close friend drinking were associated with binge drinking.
There is high prevalence in use of alcohol among the college students in Bhutan. Health promotion programs should be implemented focusing on alcohol use reduction among college students.
