Improvement of unsaturated polyester/rice straw biocomposites by fiber surface treatment and post-curing
Abstract:
Nowadays, agricultural wastes have attracted attention for composite material fabrication due to growing concerns in the environment and sustainability. Rice straw is one of the agricultural wastes that has a potential to be used as a reinforcing agent owing to its abundance in Thailand. In this work, rice straw was used as a reinforcement and unsaturated polyester (UP) resin was used as a matrix. The biocomposites were prepared by using a compression molding technique. Firstly, the effect of different processing steps: using (i) non-sealed mold and (ii) sealed mold with an aluminum foil during the forming and curing of biocomposites on their structures and mechanical properties was investigated. The results were shown that the sealed mold resulted in the higher gel content percentage or crosslinking degree as well as an increase in the flexural properties of the biocomposites. This was supposedly due to the sealed mold could protect the UP system from excessive monomer loss during the heated curing reaction. Secondly, the effect of fiber volume fraction (Vf) on the biocomposite performance was also studied. The results showed that the biocomposites with Vf of 0.3 exhibited the highest strength and modulus values (29.2 ± 3.3 MPa and 2.3 ± 0.1 GPa, respectively). The SEM photos indicated a good wettability and bonding between rice straw fibers and UP resin in this biocomposite structure. Thirdly, the effect of fiber treatment was investigated because the compatibility between rice straw fiber and UP resin is poor. To improve compatibility, rice straw fiber was treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hot water treatment. The result from SEM showed treated rice straw had a rough surface due to removing of lignin and hemicellulose. The result of FTIR and TGA confirmed that lignin and hemicellulose were removed from rice straw fiber. From mechanical test results, the rice straw treated with 12% NaOH could receive the highest load. Lastly, the effect of post-curing was investigated. The results were shown that the post-curing did not increase the gel content of the composites. In the other hand, the mechanical properties of composites were slightly increased.
