The Appropriateness of Feed forward and Feedback Mechanisms in Alerting Less Conscious User Response
Abstract:
Nowadays, most of products are designed to support users using them consciously. In
fact, actually there are four stages of learning according to the relationship of
consciousness and competency, 1) unconscious incompetence, 2) conscious
incompetence, 3) conscious competence, and 4) unconscious competence. The third
stage is accepted to be perfect because users are using products consciously. Most of
the designs use feed forward signal that might not effective to alert users since users
might not react automatically.
The aim of study was to examine whether feedback or feed forward is better to alert
users to act in tenn of speed to respond signal. The methodology in this study was the
perfonnance measurement. Subjected perfonned two tests. One was a task nonnally
done unconsciously. In this case, sitting was selected. Second was a task having
perfonnance to pull as much as possible attention from subjects. Moving two red beans
per time by chopsticks was selected. The assumption was that subjects always get
closer to the moving red beans when they pay much attention to moving red beans.
On the other hand, there are feedback and feed forward signals providing to subjects for
alerting them to control the distance between their eyes and moving red beans. The
result shows that feedback was better to alert subject to control the distance between
their eyes and moving red beans. Feedback performed better in term of alerting subjects
to concern the task that they were doing consciously and also disturbed the second task
more than feed forward.
The explanation is that a responding to feedback signal seemed was happened suddenly
then acting part reported to the brain but a responding to feed forward was happened
whenever the brain command to body part. However, only feedback signal cannot
complete alerting the unconscious competence users, the kinesthetic ability of the tasks
should be include. The study did not show any confirmation of the appropriated ways to
use feedback signaL It just showed the related basic factors which should be found and
concerned for using feedback signal in products.
