A Study of Difficulty in English Sentence Writing of the Myanmar Students at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University

Abstract: The objectives of this study are 1) to study the difficulty in English sentence writing of B.A. and M.A. Myanmar students at the Faculty of Humanities in Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. 2) to provide the way for the B.A and M.A Myanmar students to write English sentences at the Faculty of Humanities in Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. The number of the population in this study was 253 B.A and M.A Myanmar students who were studying at the Faculty of Humanities in MCU but the sampling participants were 153 students who were active to answer the research questions. The instrument used in this study was both quantitative and qualitative method. Research tools of this study were a research questionnaire and an in- depth interviews and giving comments. The responses of the participants were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation (S.D) The result of research has been found that: General background of respondents: the finding results of general background of respondents were that 147 students were male and 6 students were female. Majority of respondents were 26 to 30 years old and mostly were first year students. Majority of students studied English about 5 years and over 5 years and mostly M.A students. The result of objective one: According to responses of the participants to the research questionnaires, the occurrence of the results was that half of the Myanmar students had difficulties to write English sentences so resultant average was moderate level equal to x̅ = 3.09 in the objective one of this research. The result of objective two: In the result of research objective two, the resultant average level was high equal to x̅ =3.91 because majority of the students are willing to get the way to write English sentences. The result of in-depth interview: The result of In-depth interview occurred that the students should know four kinds of sentence clearly to write English academically; students should read academic books and they need to analyze four kinds of sentence in same time; students should write English sentences by English idea but not by their own individual languages idea. After finishing the investigation, the suggestion of the researcher was that the Myanmar students should understand four kinds of sentence included phrases and clauses to solve their difficulties to write English sentences professionally. The suggestion of the researcher to the Myanmar students to solve their difficulties in English sentence writing is the students should try to understand four kinds of English sentence: simple sentence, complex sentence, compound sentence and mixed sentence because in these four types of sentence consist of using phrases, clauses, comma, punctuation and conjunctions.
