Abstract:
This study aimed to 1) Investigate forms and different types of gambling of students staying in and around the UbonRatchathaniRajabat University, bonratchathani province; 2) explore frequency and factors affecting different types of gambling of students staying in and around the UbonRatchathaniRajabat University; 3) study impact of gambling on students staying in and around the UbonRatchathaniRajabat University; and 4) be a guideline for prevention of new gamblers and mitigation of the gambling impact. The samples included 554 UbonRatchathaniRajabat Universitystudents, gained through simple random sampling technique. The in-depth interview sample group was 12 volunteered students and the group discussion sample group was 11 volunteered students. The instruments were the 5-point Likert scale, with the reliability and validity value of 0.89 and 0.95, respectively, and the in-depth interview guide/focus group guide. The descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean, and standard deviation were used to analyze the quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed descriptively.
Results showed that1)Formsand types of gambling involved 1.1Game Playing Style: online 1.2 Socceronline through websites; playing onsite offering the services such as at a soccer betting table 1.3 Casino: Playingonline with live VDO 1.4) Lottery Playing Style: illegal lottery by sending numbers through the Internet to host/banker of the gamble, or called the host; Online lottery- stock market lottery 1.5 Sweepstake Trade: their siblings and they had played including buying for a sweepstake chance, sending SMS to win an award 2) Frequencies of online gambling, 17.5 per cent Gambling after hour every day. Time spent in playing was at least 1-2 hours to 4-5 hours, the longest was 2-3 days continually without sleeping. Found that the sample students did sending the SMS 18.8 per cent. For the frequency of sending, the UbonRatchathani Rajabhat University mostly sent it every day 61.5-94.8 per cent. 3) Impact of gambling of the students staying in and around the university showed that games/gambling had both positive and negative. On the positive side, for example, there was strengthening emotional developmentenjoyable and in good mood. The negative side involved, for example, bad for health, less rest, insufficient study. The impact in the university were student-instructor cluster working collaboratively in building Professional Community, activities, projects, research projects, integration of the issues & project/research in instruction. The impact at the provincial level were Network working of public, private, peoples and education organizations and the research was used as a supplement document of a draft of the 3 year provincial strategic plan. 4) Suggestions on ways to prevent new gamblers and impact mitigation, for example , recognition of adverse effects on physical health, mental health and wastes of money.
