Development of field test procedure to assess the performance of used tire
Abstract:
From an overview of road accidents in Thailand, it was found that the condition of vehicle tires was one reason for the high number of accidents. As a result, the aging of tires is the root of the problem. In Thailand, second-hand tires are popular because of their cheap price. There were four types of tires used in the study, which included new tires manufactured in 2018 that were used as the benchmarks and used tires from second-hand tire shops manufactured in 2015, 2014, and 2013, respectively. For the tire testing standards, most requirements focused on the mechanical properties and comfort testing. In addition, there were no test standards that considered tires with a full vehicle model. Therefore, this research aimed to propose a tire testing method based on field tests to identify the tire performance parameters. The tire performance is considered in terms of traction and grip, which is based on driving safety. The test was divided into three forms consisting of brake performance test, steady state circular test and severe lane change maneuver test. In terms of the brake performance test, this was operated under the United Nation Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulations number r13-h, which indicates the performance of the tire that affects the car stopping situation. The steady state circular test was conducted based on the ISO-4138 standard. This test was an evaluation of road holding while turning, or as it is known cornering performance. Finally, the severe lane change maneuver test was undertaken based on the ISO-3888 standard. The ability to change the driving lane and the stability of the vehicle were measured by using this test. Additionally, the best dynamic behavior of the vehicle appeared on new tires in each test and declined with the increasing age of tires. Hence, this research provides strong encouragement of driving safety testing protocols for passenger cars and other vehicle categories.
