THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY ABOUT STATISTICS BY ORGANIZING LEARNING ACTIVITIES THAT FOCUS ON THE MATHEMATICAL CONNECTION TO REAL-LIFE FOR 9TH GRADE STUDENTS
Abstract:
The purpose of this research were. 1) to study the ability to solve mathematical problems on statistics by using learning activities that focus on connecting mathematics to real life, 2) to compare the ability to solve mathematical problems after learning about statistics that emphasize linking mathematics to real life with the criteria of 70% and 3) to study the satisfaction of the nine grade students towards the development of mathematical problem solving ability on statistics by using learning activities that emphasize connecting mathematics to real life. The research samples were nine grade students at Rongkham school in the second semester of academic year 2019. There are 38 students by cluster random sampling. The instruments used were Learning management plan, record form of observing behavior of researcher and student, record form of result after teaching, students interview form, quiz, problem solving ability in mathematical tests and a questionnaire for students' satisfaction with learning activities that focus on connecting mathematics to real life. This research is Action Research which divides learning management into 2 action circuits. Students take an exam at the end of the operational cycle. Then, choose students to interview individually to learn more about solving mathematical problems to improve and develop learning management plans using learning activities that focus on linking mathematics to real life in action cycle 2, have students take a test to solve mathematical problems. The statistics used in the study were percentage, arithmetic mean ( ), standard deviation (SD) and one-simple t-test statistic.
The results of the research revealed that 1) The overall mathematical problem solving ability of students by 82.88% very good level and from interviews students can tell what the problem requires, what the problem needs to know, have a plan and have errors in the operation of problem solving were reduced. 2) The ability to solve mathematical problems after organizing learning activities that emphasize linking mathematics to real life of students is higher than the criteria of 70 percent with statistical significance at the level of .05 with an average value equal to 82.88% and 3) students are satisfied with the learning activities that focus on connecting mathematics to real life on statistics Overall is at a high level.
