Evaluation of mechanical properties of high strength woven fabric material
Abstract:
Membrane materials utilizing high-strength fibers have been recently researched, developed, applied to various fields (e.g., aerospace) because of their flexibility and light weight. However, fibrous materials, especially woven ones, exhibit special behaviors because of their complex structures, which limits their design. In this study, we clarify the mechanical properties of woven fabric using the acoustic emission (AE) method. This method analyzes elastic waves generated by defects inside materials and can be used to facilitate the evaluation of internal damage. In this study, the fracture mechanism of the woven fabric is estimated by monitoring its tensile test by using the AE method. Furthermore, the possibility of real-time monitoring of woven fabric fractures is shown by classifying the detected AE signal according to the shape, amplitude, and frequency of the waveform
