The relationship between efl University learners' attitudes and their English language achievement

Abstract: It is well-recognized that such non-linguistic factors as attitudes have the influence on second language learning and acquisition in various degrees. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between attitudes and the language achievement among the university learners learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The total 133 English major undergraduates participated in this study. The method of questionnaire was mainly employed. The main questionnaire in this study was the Attitude Test Scales. The descriptive analysis and Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient were utilized to analyze the data and find out the significant relationship. The results indicated that participants’ attitude in this study was in favorable degree and there was the significant relationship between their attitudes and language achievement (r =.337). Moreover, the relationships among the learners’ language achievement in relation to interest in foreign languages (r =.306) and integrative orientation (r =.286) were found positively. However, this study did not find the significant relationships between language achievement and attitude towards English-speaking people and attitudes towards English language learning. The study concluded that the learners’ attitude had significant relationships with language learning achievement, especially when positive attitudes towards interest in foreign language and integrative orientation were positively cultivated into EFL university learners.

Abstract: การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยด้านทัศนคติต่อการเรียนรู้และผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาอังกฤษของผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาต่างประเทศในระดับมหาวิทยาลัย กลุ่มตัวอย่างในโครงการวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นนักศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีชั้นปีที่สี่ สาขาวิชาภาษาอังกฤษ จากมหาวิทยาลัยรัฐบาลแห่งหนึ่ง จำนวน 133 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยประกอบด้วยแบบสอบถามเกี่ยวกับ ทัศนคติของผู้เรียนที่มีต่อภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาต่างประเทศเรียกว่า Attitude Test Scale การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้โปรกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ในการวิเคราะห์ค่าสถิติพื้นฐานและใช้การคำนวณ Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient ในการหาค่าความสัมพันธ์ของตัวแปร ผลของการวิจัยปรากฏว่า ทัศนคติของผู้ร่วมการทดลองครั้งนี้อยู่ในระดับ เห็นด้วย หมายถึง มีระดับของทัศนคติดี และมีการพบความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญระหว่างทัศนคติของผู้เรียนกับผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษา (r=.337) กลุ่มของทัศนคติที่พบว่ามีความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยยะสำคัญกับผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาประกอบด้วย ความสนใจในภาษาต่างประเทศ (r=.306) และทัศนคติจากปัจจัยภายใน (r=.286) และกลุ่มของทัศนคติที่พบว่าไม่มีความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญกับผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาประกอบด้วย ทัศนคติที่มีต่อคนที่พูดภาษาอังกฤษ และทัศนคติที่มีต่อการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ งานวิจัยนี้สรุปได้ว่า พบความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างทัศนคติและผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาของผู้เรียนในเชิงบวก และกลุ่มของทัศนคติที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาคือ ความสนใจในภาษาต่างประเทศ และทัศนคติจากปัจจัยภายใน
