Abstract:
Social intelligence is important and necessary to be promoted for nursing students. Social
intelligence assist nursing students to have ability in understanding themselves and others,have
good relationships, adapt themselves well and behave appropriately with the situation, able to
collaborate in working effectively with others and live happily in society. The purposesof this
descriptive correlational study were to examine social intelligence and test its relationship with
associated factors including academic achievement, coping strategies, ability of learning adjustment,
interpersonal relationships, teaching and learning atmosphere of nursing students. Stratified random
sampling was used to select college nursing students in the 1
st to 4th years to participate in this study
(n= 120). Data collection was conducted using personal information record, and five self- reported
questionnaires including social intelligence, coping strategies, ability of learning adjustment,
interpersonal relationships and teaching and learning atmosphere. The reliability coefficients of these
five questionnaires were .82, .76, .80, .91, and .90, respectively. Descriptive statistics and Pearsons
Product Moment Correlation were employed for data analyses.
The results revealed that the average score of social intelligence in total was 105.09 (SD =
9.49) which is at a moderate level. The social intelligence was significantly correlated with ability of
learning adjustment, coping strategies, interpersonal relationships, and teaching and learning
atmosphere at p < .01 (r = .593, .572, .562, and.218 respectively). The academic achievement was
not significantly correlated withsocial intelligence.
Administrators and instructors in nursing education can use this study results as a baseline
data for the development of intervention aimed at enhancingnursing students social intelligenceby
enhancing students abilitiesof learning adjustment, coping strategies, interpersonal relationships
and teaching and learning atmosphere.
