Abstract:
Neonates receiving phototherapy need intensive care from mother the most. Thus,
mother participation in caring of neonates receiving phototherapy it is very important. This
predictive correlational research aimed to examine predicting factors of maternal participation in
caring for their neonates with jaundice receiving phototherapy. The study samples included
100 mothers of neonates with jaundice receiving phototherapy admitted at Queen SavangVadhana
Memorial Hospital and Samut Prakan Hospital. Data were collected from December 2016 to
March 2017. Research instruments consisted of questionnaires regarding demographic
characteristics, maternal participation in caring for neonate with jaundice receiving phototherapy,
parent and neonate attachment, parent-nurse communication, and support from nurse. Cronbachs
alpha coefficients of the questionnaires were .81, .81, .85, and .91, respectively. Data were
analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearsons correlation and stepwise multiple regression.
Results showed that attachment between mothers and neonates was significantly
correlated with maternal participation in caring for neonate with jaundice receiving phototherapy
(r= .535, p< .001) and significantly predict 29 % of variance in maternal participation
(F2, 97= 37.188, p< .001) Therefore, nurses and health care providers should develop an
intervention to promote maternal participation in caring for neonates with jaundice receiving
phototherapy by promoting the attachment of mothers and neonates.
