A Mathematical Model of Electrode Fouling during Collector-Generator Experiments using a Scanning Electrochemical Microscope (SECM)
Abstract:
The electrode fouling was found out in oxidation reaction such as the direct methanol
fuel cell, and the process of glucose oxidation in micro and nano dimension, therefore it
need to be studied to describe the effect of electric current. In this thesis, mathematic
model was used to describe the transient response of electric current that affe~ted by
electrode fouling during collector-generator experiment using a scanning
electrochemical microscope (SECM). Its solutions were obtained numerical method
(approximate method). The method of orthogonal collocation was used to transform
model, which was set a partial differential equation, to a set of ordinary differential
equations (ODEs).
The models were separated into two parts consisting of the initial test and the studied
work models. Firstly, the gap distance between tip and substrate was calculated using
some parameter from the experimental data such as electric current in bulk solution (ioo),
electric current at steady state (i), gamma value (1), and radius of electrode (R). Later,
the initial test and the studied work models were generate from the transport mechanism
of mass equation. Each of models used the same method for solving (orthogonal
collocation method) but they were considered in different directions. The initial test
model was considered in one dimension (z-direction) while the studied was considered
in two dimensions (r, z-direction). The trend of simulated results from the initial test
model was similar to the experimental results but the precision of this model was quit
low. Moreover, the initial test model was estimated the kinetic parameters (kA, and k)
using fitting the simulated with experimental results. The kinetic parameter is necessary
to find out the fractional coverage, which is factor for prediction electrode fouling.
Subsequently, the results from studied work model were shown in two forms consisting
of the concentration profile of A, and B and the transient response of electric current.
The concentration profiles of both elements were shown in two directions (r, z-
direction). They were explained about the change of concentration in each of positions.
Next, the transient response of electric current was presented to describe the dynamic
behavior of electric current at tip electrode. In addition, this model was fit with the
experimental results to obtain the kinetic parameters (kA, and k) to predict the electric
current accurately. The prediction electric current of studied work was realistic more
than the initial test because of considering in two directions.
