The Effects of Using Creative Writing Activities on Students' Attitudes Towards Learning English
Abstract:
This study investigates whether creative writing activities can be used as a tool for
changing students' attitudes in their learning of English. The activities used were
Drawing from Your Visualization, Cooperative Writing, and Stream of Consciousness
Writing.
The subjects of the study were the 35 Matayom 4 female students who took the
compulsory course ENG 41102: English 5 in academic year 2/2006, from the Science
Program at Striwatabsornsawan School. First they were asked to do the prequestionnaire
and after using the three creative writing activities, they did the postquestionnaire.
Then eight subjects were selected to be interviewed: four of them with
positive changes in attitudes and four subjects with negative changes in attitudes.
From the results of this study, students did not change their attitudes towards learning
English much. Most students. still have the same attitudes while there are some
students with positive attitude changes and there are a few students with negative
attitude changes after using creative writing activities. From the interviews, all of the
students liked creative writing activities, even the students with negative changes in
in attitudes. This is because activities were enjoyable, and they could use their
imagination in learning.
