Abstract:
This research aims to study the increasing number of English transliterated
words, spelling change in transliterated words, and category of English transliterated
words in Thai Dictionary by The Royal Institute 2493 B.E. edition, 2525 B.E. edition,
2542 B.E. edition, 2554 B.E. edition, and Dictionary of New Word 2557 B.E. edition.
The findings are that in 2525 B.E. edition the number of transliterated words
is the most; 436 words. In the Dictionary of New Word 2557 B.E. edition, the number
of increasing words is 420 words. Among those 420 new words, 28 words have
already existed in the dictionary of 2554 B.E. edition. Therefore, the number of brand
new words is 392. The change of spelling is found in 9 words and the change appears
in 2 ways: 1) spelling has been changed from the old one (5 words) and 2) new
spelling and old spelling are both acceptable (4 words).
The examination of category of English transliterated words in all four
editions (2493 B.E. edition, 2525 B.E. edition, 2542 B.E. edition, 2554 B.E. edition)
shows that the number of transliterated words increased the most in the 2525 B.E.
edition in all 4 categories (13 types): 1) word about nature (7 types); 2) words about
human and human behavior (3 types); 3) word about intelligence, emotion, and
value (1 type); 4) words about interpersonal relations (2 types). In Dictionary of New
Word 2557 B.E. edition, the increase happens in 2 categories of vocabulary (8 types):
1) words about human and human behavior (5 types) and 2) words about
interpersonal relations (3 types).
