Hedging used in courtroom scenes appearing in the American movies
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate English language forms and
functions of hedging appearing in courtroom scenes of American movies.
Additionally, this study examined the differences between male and female characters
of witness and defendant regarding to the use of hedging in courtroom scenes. Twenty
movies were randomly selected and courtroom scenes were focused where turn taking
between lawyers and witnesses/defendants occurred. Forms of hedging proposed by
Fraser (2010) and functions of hedging proposed by Prince, Frader and Bosk (1982)
were employed as frameworks to analyze the collected data in this study. The results
indicated that the highest frequency of occurrence of English language forms of
hedging was adjectives/adverbs (29.34%), followed by epistemic verbs (22.78%) and
introductory phrase (14.67%) used by the characters of witness and defendant in
courtroom scenes. Also, regarding English language functions of hedging, it was
revealed that the highest frequency of occurrence was plausibility shields (67.57%),
followed by adaptors (22.01%). However, there were no differences between male
and female characters of witness and defendant on the use of hedging
