Abstract:
This qualitative research aimed at the knowledge construction of lunar year symbols lyric and melody composition and transferring into musical performance. The research populations were experts in astrology, Thai musicology, and the twelve lunar year symbols, namely, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The research tools were questionnaires, musical instruments, computers, cameras, and video cameras. The data concerning the legend of lunar year symbols, the horoscope of persons born under each lunar year symbols, the characteristics of the twelve animals, and the theories of Thai musical creation were collected for the composition of lyric and melody. The research concluded that human horoscopes were conveyed through lyrics and melodies, which were divided into 3 parts: primary part described the background of lunar year symbols; secondary part described each symbols horoscope; and, final part summarized the overall conclusions. The music was performed by an experimental Thai music ensemble, in which Thai musical instruments played a vital role, while the international musical instruments were blended as appropriate, and accompanied by various rhythmic instruments in order to create and imitate animal sounds and movements. The conveyance of human horoscopes through the experimental Thai music ensemble performance reflects the fact that music is another communication tool. Future research should focus on an integrated project, such as the creation of Thai dance posture of lunar year symbols.
