An Application of the Reproducing Kernel Element Method to the Linear Advection Equation
Abstract:
The smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH), the reproducing kernel particle
method (RKPM), and the reproducing kernel element method (RKEM) are used to
formulate the solution of the one-dimensional linear advection equation. Only the
uniformly distributed particles are used and the cubic spline function is chosen to define
the weight function for the kernel of integral. The globalized polynomial shape function
in the RKEM is represented by a 1-D linear basis function. It is found that the RKEM
shape function is much more complex than the shape functions obtained from SPH and
RKPM and also requires a large number of particles to approximate the solution. Thus,
numerical results are carried out only for the cases of SPH and RKPM. It is revealed
that there are at least three main types of error in the numerical results. The first is the
error due to the inconsistency of asymmetric weight function near and on the
boundaries. The second is the error due to the forward time finite difference method.
Finally, the third is the accumulated error that is a combination of the first two errors.
However, all of errors can be reduced by increasing the number of particles used in the
analysis.
