Innovative pedagogical practice models for English teachers : a case study at Srisuvit School, Thailand
Abstract:
Human resource development is the main concern of the Thai government,
specifically developing the English communication skills for Thais in order to prepare
them to acquire a competitive advantage. Schooling is the approach for developing
English communication skills for Thai students. This study is about exploring
a pedagogical English teaching model from analyzing the data from the classroom
action research conducted at Srisuvit School.
The research objectives are 1) To compose a systematic English teaching
model to be implemented at the school. 2) To explore the factors that help the English
teachers at the school be competent in English teaching. 3) To explore the English
teaching activities appropriate for different grade levels of students and 4) To explore
how those teachers work together in teaching English at the school. The research
approach is Mixed Methods, using Concurrent Embedded Design. The informants
who provided the research data were eight pairs of English teachers from the English
Department of the school with a total of 16 teachers.
The data analysis for the quantitative research methods was the mean to
measure the teacher competency and attitudes towards teaching English.
The qualitative data analysis from the classroom action research was done through
annual coding, categorizing and theming. The research results are: 1) The systematic
English teaching model was composed of seven elements, they were: school culture
and policies, parent participation, English learning environment, teachers selfdevelopment, students individual differences, teaching pedagogy, and finally student
v
learning achievement. 2) The factors that help teachers be more competent in teaching
English are: working together in pairs and application of teaching pedagogy,
3) Approaches that suit the different grade levels of students abilities: letting students
work in groups, giving student encouragement and motivation, using songs, making
them relaxed and comfortable, letting student do self-evaluations, and building an
English learning atmosphere. 4) The ways that teachers work together: the more
experienced teachers worked with the less experienced teachers, identifying problems
together, analyzing problems, planning lessons, and having discussions after class.
It was recommended that the parent participation element of the English teaching
model would be the most beneficial to all private schools.
