Supply chain balanced scorecard structure of strategy map for rice milling business performance : Ayeyarwady region, Myanmar
Abstract:
In view of the significant role of the rice milling industry in Myanmar, and a lack of theoretical and empirical research in rice-milling context, this research tries to fill the gap. The objectives of this research are to study the current situation of rice supply chain in Ayeyarwady region and to analyze the supply chain factors that influence on the rice milling business performance in Ayeyarwady Region in Myanmar, which twelve supply chain factors were examined from interview with 10 rice millers and literature review of previous research and reports. And the original balanced scorecard (BSC) and strategy map structure is extended by considering the stimulation effect of how the rice millers perceive on their industrys competitive environment. Mixed method is used in this research. The interview result showed that the six players: farmers, paddy collectors, rice millers, local wholesalers, retailers and traders are involved in the rice supply chain. The detail of material flow, information flow and financial flow of each players were identified in this research. In addition, Semi-structured interviews lead to the scopes and contents relevant to help putting a causal structure to the proposed supply chain BSC structure of strategy map, which helps the questionnaire design. A questionnaire-based survey was distributed to 369 rice millers (owners and managers) in Ayeyarwady region. The measurement is pilot-tested and assessed on both reliability and validity i.e. construct validity, convergent and discriminate validities. Factor analysis performed to ensure no overlaps of measurements for different constructs or variables. Hierarchical multiple regression method is used to provide the statistical testing evidence to support or reject the hypotheses. The multiple regression analysis results showed that the milling facility and capacity, quality of customer relationship management, cost reduction effort, logistics and transportation, are significantly positive relationship and threat of new entrants is negatively relationship with rice milling business performance while other factors were not statistically significant relationship with rice milling business performance. Among them, quality of customer relationship management is the strongest relationship with rice milling business performance. And the proposed BSC structure of strategy map was shown valid, with R-squared ranging 0.6 - 0.9 in the variance explanation of the dependent variables.
Therefore, the extended BSC and strategy map is a new stimulation perspective through competitive force, which provides an important implication that is, the pressure put forward by the rice millers do have significant impact on stimulating the efforts of learning and growth of the rice millers, which in turn, drive the other aspects of strategies in the supply chain, namely the internal business process, customer-winning and financial performance. And the government can share the picture on this result and can stimulate the supply chain relationship.
