Cost Effective Solutions in Telecommunication Business
Abstract:
This research studies the cost effective solutions in telecommunication services. Based on the characteristics
of telecommunication business, there are many solutions that can be used to minimize the cost investment. However, in
this study only two cases have been investigated i.e., the mobile international roaming and power line communication
pricing model in Thailand.
Nowadays, the mobile communication helps people communicate at anytime and anywhere. We can use mobile not only
in registering country but also in any countries by using International Roaming (IR) service. Even if the IR is convenient for user, the charging for making and receiving calls are quite expensive, especially, when you are in a roaming country. Any callers in the roaming country have to make international call to your home country and be responsible for International Direct Dialing (IDD) charging. Moreover, you have to be charged for IDD from your country to the roaming country as well. In this research paper, the solution called Roamer Direct Dialing (RDD) to reduce high charging and call looping of an IR call is proposed. It is used for the optimal routing of an IR call by checking roamer location and its profiles then directly routing the call to the roamer as a local call. Roamer calls are charged as local calls instead. Also, any calls from a local caller in the roaming country to a roamer are charged at lower price. It can be shown that IR call charging can be reduced up to 40% and the quality of call will be better due to the local routing call.
The internet has been widely used while the service providers are looking for a cost effective and proven technology that does not require new wire to end users for providing the services with higher speed, in particular the provider who lacks of the last mile i.e. CAT Telecom in Thailand. The power line grid can be used as a local loop in telecommunication network for providing all telecommunication services efficiently by using the electricity infrastructure. Therefore, high investments in a local loop infrastructure can be avoided. Broadband access can be available from any electrical outlet and the consumer can get a lower price service. The scope of this study is the solution for CAT Telecom to provide the services, and the pricing model over the power line grids of Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).
