Abstract:
Because of the traffic problem in highly populated section of Bangkok metropolitan area, pipe jacking method in
water work construction projects were employed and adapted by the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA)
in order to lessen the problems caused by the waterwork project in the congested area. This research studied and
compared three types of pipe jacking construction projects. They are Type 1: Steel pipe with concrete sleeve pipe;
Type 2: Steel Concentric Double Cylinder Pipe (SCP); and Type 3: Reinforced concrete pressure pipe. This study
summarized the pipe jacking construction methods, major equipments and resource lists, assigned crew, and the
production rate in the jacking activities. It is found that the Type 1 project faced a cost overrun because the particular
project needed a large driving pit to accommodate a large steel pipe section (9-meter length each) into the steel sleeve
pipe. The Type 2 project experienced a low production rate due to delays of the specified welding tests and inspections.
The Type 3 project had problems with inappropriate joint connection that caused the gap of pipe connection over the
allowable standard. Each type had its advantages and disadvantages. Suggestions and method selection criteria were
summarized in this study.
