Abstract:
In retrospect, due to political changes, macroeconomic variables are adversely affected and thus in turn cause the price level to be high and fluctuated. The price instability is an affair that should not be left unconcerned as squeezing citizens welfare led to political instability in history. This paper investigates the long run relationship between price level and selected macroeconomic variables: in Myanmar. For 1983- 2014, four simple linear regression models with single regressors, money supply, exchange rate, inflation inertia, and supply bottlenecks were estimated using various econometric methodologies: Engle and Granger two step cointegration approach, Markov regime switching Engle Granger approach, Johansen cointegration approach under bivariate framework, weak exogeneity test and Bayesian conditional cointegration approach. The empirical findings suggest that all macroeconomic variables selected under this study are found to have long run relationship with the price level, highlighting the need of contractionary monetary policy in Myanmar.
