Developing students' English speaking skills with the content and language integrated learning approach
Abstract:
The purposes of the study were to examine students language achievement by implementing the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Approach and to develop Mathayomsuksa 6 students speaking skills. The participants were Mathayomsuksa 6 students that were divided into two groups: control group, and experimental group. I implemented the CLIL approach in the experimental group. The research instruments used for data collection were the lesson plans, achievement tests (Pretest and Posttest) and observation. Quantitative data were corrected and statistically analyzed by the means and percentages.
The quantitative findings showed that the students from the experimental group had significantly higher language achievement in speaking skills than the control group in a) communication, b) vocabulary, c) fluency, and d) grammar. The qualitative findings showed that classroom atmosphere, language skills, learning activities and material were factors in the CLIL classroom that improved students language achievement. The CLIL approach can be implemented in an English class to enhance students speaking skills.
