Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to study the involvement of students in the surveillance problem on student misconduct and delineate factors associated with such participation, including proposing a model for the involvement of students in the surveillance problem of student misconduct. Three hundred and thirty-five high school students from various schools in Metropolitan Bangkok and 17 educational officers were the sample. This was a mixed method study (quantitative research and the qualitative method). A questionnaire and structured interview were used to collect data. The data were analyzed through mean, standard deviation, chi-square, and correlation analysis. The results showed that among personal factors, the majority of the sample are male, the average GPA is between 2.51 to 3.00, they are not a member of any program of the school, their parents still live together, family income is between 10,001 to 20,000 baht per month andthey are living at the home of their parents. The levels of involvement of students in the surveillance problem on student misconduct, participation in activities,whether on prevention plan, assessing the situation, monitoring, and evaluation, were all found to be moderate. The factors associated with such participation are grade point average, the membership in organizations within the school, housing and the average household income, residentialcharacteristics, and nearbyresidential area. Regarding the problem of student misconduct, it was found that inappropriate behavior includes sexual problems, smoking and drug addiction, tardiness and loafing. Development activities include collaboration with parents and the community, teaching and cultivating discipline, developing self and collective responsibilities, encouraging public mindedness and team spirit, creating programs of cooperation for alumni, and monitoring of behavior by parents and students. The recommendations from this study are to provide student initiated projects, set good role models for the students at the school,provide citations for good behavior, create activities for the teachers, students, parents and the community together, train teachers to educate and prepare to cope with youth, and coordinate with other agencies to develop joint activities, study social bonds that affect students' behavior, including studying students in the other school systems.
