Abstract: Betel nut, Coir, Nypa palm and oil palm fibers are similar in their surface structure. It was found by SEM investigation that they all had pores which contained substance compost of silica. After alkaline treatment, the silica was dissolved and left the fibers with empty hold. We investigate the effect of pores on crystallization of PLA by isothermal condition at 130 °C under polarize optical microscope. The effect of fiber types on isothermal crystallization of PLA was studied. The results under POM showed that the size of spherulite forming in the system containing oil palm fibers, both with and without alkaline treatment, was the largest. Whereas the spherulites size formed in other fibers system are about the same. The crystallinity of PLA in the fiber/PLA composite were also investigate using temperature scan using DSC. The results showed that the composite with untreated nypa palm fiber gave highest crystallinity. In term of alkaline treated system, oil palm fiber system seemed to possess highest crystallinity. It could be noticed that size and pores were affected on nucleating activity of PLA on the fibers.
