The 1-year overall survival outcome among 221 imaging-diagnosed cholangiocarcinoma patients in Roi-et province, Thailand, 2012
Abstract:
Thailand has been burdened with the problem of cholangiocarcinoma for many years, but the factors which may influence the prognosis of the disease during treatment have not been studied seriously. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics and survival outcomes among the 221 imaging-diagnosed cholangiocarcinoma patients in the Roi-et cancer center from January to October 2010 from the Hos-XP program. Cox-proportional hazard regression was applied among 62 patients, who supplied all requested data, to study the hazard ratio among particular factors. The one-year median survival time was 10 months, and the one-year survival rate was 45%. There was no association between survival time and age >60 years, sex, occupation, type of health insurance, bilirubin level > 5 mg/dl, CA 19-9 level, and receiving surgery or a palliative operation. Only the factor of CEA level > 5 µg/l had a statistically significantly effect on one-year survival time. CEA level can be used to make a decision for treatment. However, a five-year follow-up with well-designed data collection should be considered.
