Abstract:
Butanol toxicity to the fermenting culture has been a major problem in the production of the biofuel. Simultaneous removal of butanol by adsorption during the fermentation is one of efficient solutions to the problem. In this work, a flake liked poly(ether block amide) adsorbent was prepared by a precipitation method. The particle sizes of as prepared adsorbent ranged between 0.177 to 0.841 mm was used to adsorb butanol from an aqueous solution containing 1.0, 19.2, and 1.7 g/L of acetone, butanol, and ethanol, respectively. The adsorption capacities observed from static adsorption at 37 Celsius degrees were 1.8, 53.1, and 1.8 g solvent/g adsorbent, for acetone, butanol, and ethanol, respectively. The adsorption capacities of adsorbent remained unchanged even after four repeated-experiments. The successful prediction of butanol adsorption by Freundlich isotherm and the swelling of the adsorbent implied that the adsorption involved the penetration of butanol into the polymer matrix. The dynamic adsorption was also carried out with the synthetic acetone butanol ethanol fermentation broth. The breakthrough curve showed that the adsorbent was able to retain butanol, while acetone and ethanol were observed shortly after the effluent flowed out of the packed-bed. The adsorbent therefore had potential to be used for the butanol recovery from the fermentation broth
