Abstract: Rice husk, an agricultural waste from the rice milling, can be used as an alternative resource to produce silica. In this study, silica was obtained from burning rice husk at 750 Celsius degrees for 3 h followed by alkaline extraction (NaOH) and acid precipitation (HCl). Bio-composite films were prepared by adding different rice husk silica contents (1 percent-5 percent) to the rice starch. The rice husk silica rice starch films were achieved by a solution casting method. The results showed that the tensile strength of composite films having 3-5 percent rice husk silica was higher than that of the rice starch film. As the rice husk silica content increased, the transmittance values of the composite films decreased. The rice husk silica was used as a bio-filler in the rice starch film for preparing environmentally friendly bio-composite films in packaging applications
