Abstract:
The three-layered sandwich composite film was prepared from chitosan, carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate by using the solution casting technique. The 2 percent w per v of CaCl2 solution was used for cross-linking film. Within five minutes of cross-linking, the tensile strength of film increased to 50 percent. In addition, the swelling test revealed that 34 percent water could diffuse into the film. This led to 11.86 percent degradable capability for 30 days in the soil burial test. Moreover, the less cracking and voids from degradation were observed. The results also confirmed that this film was suitable to mulch film for agricultural uses.
