Abstract:
The use of maleic anhydride-grafted polybutadiene (PB-g-MAH) as a compatibilizer for acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene-propylene diene rubber (EPDM) blends (using 30 70 ratio of NBR EPDM) was investigated. The amount of PB-g-MAH was varied from 0-10 parts per hundred of rubber (phr). Cure characteristics, mechanical properties, oil swelling resistance and morphology of 30 70 NBR EPDM blends in the presence and absence of different amounts of PB-g-MAH were evaluated. The results revealed that the presence of PB-g-MAH did not significantly affect scorch time (ts2) and cure time (tc100). Crosslink density, tensile strength and tear strength increased with increasing PB-g-MAH content between 2-4 phr, whereas, compression set decreased with increasing PB-g-MAH contents. The experiment showed that PB-g-MAH loading by 4 phr was the optimum level for 30 70 NBR EPDM blends due to the compatibility and better filler dispersion. This finding is expected to have a benefit in terms of oil and thermal resistance properties for certain rubber parts in automotive applications
