Students' Difficulties And Support Needed When Studying Self-Access Speaking Materials
Abstract:
This study aims at investigating difficulties that students had when they studied selfaccess speaking materials and supports needed to enable them to solve their difficulties. The subjects involved in this study were 20 third year undergraduate students majoring in Applied Computer Science - Multimedia Program, at the Faculty of Industrial Education, King Mongkutys University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). The instrument used was a semi-structured interview, which was managed in Thai to get clear information from all the subjects. All the subjects were required to work on the three levels of self-access speaking materials at KMUTT Self-Access Language Center (SALC). The results of the study revealed that the subjects had some difficulties concerning the amount of items in the exercise and the content of the materials i.e. they need more input items, meaningful illustrations, cultural information, speaking strategies,
interactive model, resources for further study and language counsellor.
Therefore, the findings of this study review the issues that SALC organizers and
materials writers need to be aware of the support the learners need in order to study selfaccess speaking materials on their own.
