Abstract:
Two isolates of Spirulina platensis marked Z19/2 and Z13 were selected for the study because of their differences in their photosynthetic characteristics and morphology. Strain Z19/2 has higher light saturation (Ik) and is non-vacuolated. Strain Z13 has lower Ik and is vacuolated. The two strains were studied for their productivity, gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and phycocyanin content in open pond cultures and different season throughout the year. Results showed that biomass productivity during March-June (summer) of the two strains showed the difference. The productivity of 14.1 g.m-2.d-1 whereas the productivity of Z13 was 11.3 g.m-2.d-1. During the rainy season (July-Oct.), growth of Z19/2 was effected by the low and variable light intensity during the day, the productivity decreased to 7.5 g.m-2.d-1 while Z13 was less effected and had the productivity of 9.5 g.m-2.d-1. In winter (Nov.-Feb.), Z19/2 showed slightly higher productivity than Z13 (14.0 and 13.6 g.m-2.d-1, respectively). Results confirmed by another study when cultures were grown at different cell concentration (3 and 7 mg/l chlorophyll). Again, Z19/2 had higher productivity at both cell concentrations when cultivated at winter time
