Abstract: This classroom-based research study looks at the effectiveness of skimmingas a means to increase reading speed and global eomprehen&on among English asforeign language learners.The subjects in this experiment were 5 students from the Department of Tooland Materials Engineering at King Mongkut's University of Technology, Thonburi.The instruments used for data collection were pre- and post-tests, two instructionalphase tests, speed and score profile, and structured interviews.After completing the pre-test, the subjects were trained in using skimmingstrategies to improve their reading speed and comprehension. Two instructionalphases were carried out with two skimming tests. After that, the post-test wasadministered.The findings of this research study show that after being trained to applyskimming strategies the subjects improved their reading speed and globalcomprehension. The choice of what strategies to use, however, depended on theindividual preferences of each subject, their competence in using particular strategies,and their background and vocabulary knowledge concerning the passages they read.Moreover, the skimming strategies used in this experiment were found to havedifferent effects on the subjects' mean speed and score improvement in the four tests,i.e. pre-, first- and second-instructional phase, and post-tests, since the subjects useddifferent skimming strategies in taking these tests. This, therefore, implies that thestrategies used at certain stages in this experiment may affect different aspects ofstudents' skimming abilities. One interesting implication arising from studentinterviews was that the students needed to possess certain content and vocabularyknowledge in order to skim the texts more effectively. This suggests that the subjectsneeded other reading skills, e.g. word-tackling skills, to provide them with the abilityto cope with unknown words when skimming. Certain content knowledge of thetexts would also allow them to read faster with better comprehension.
