Abstract:
Design of feeding and gating design for systems for casting are traditionally based onexperience and trial and error. These methods results in a lot of waste in both time and money as oneneeds to optimize the design by real castings until they are sound. A casting design specialist isrequired to do the job. Information from such trial and error can not be used for future reference.Today, a number casting simulation softwares have been developed for foundry industry. Decidingwhether to use simulation softwares or not is a major problem for Thai foundry industry. This isbecause the software expensive and the benefits are not clear. The purpose of this thesis was to compare the two design method: modulus method andcomputer simulation method for cast iron. The simulation software to be used is MAGMASOFTฎ'The procedures were as follows: Firstly, gating and feeding system for gray cast iron (FC 200) wasdesigned by modulus method. The work pieces were three ways shape wheel shape objects. Castingswere then produced based on such design. Secondary, the designs were then optimized usingcomputer simulation software. Castings were again produced based on optimized designs. Shrinkagecavities and yield of the casting were then compared. The results of this research showed that the both designs are the same regarding shrinkagecavity as no cavity was present in the casting shrinkage cavity had not difference The computersimulation method improved the yields composed with the modulus method : about 4% on threeways shape objects and 8% on wheel shape ones. Conclusion, the computer simulation method for gating and feeding system design canimprove yield of gray cast iron casting composed with the modulus method./
