Abstract:
The research was concerned in the management of wastewater from fruit and milkcanning industry. The study was camed out in canning factory that produced several productssuch as fruit, fruit juice, milk and coffee. This study aims at water consumption, wastewater theamounts of the characteristics ofwastewzter and the efficiency of wastewater treatment system.The results showed that this factory utilized 1033 m3/d. of water and produced 659 m3/dofwastwdter. The BOD5, COD, TKN and SS loading from the factory were 1954,4165,20 and 95 kg/d,respectively or 3.25, 6.93, 0.03 and 0.16 kg/ton of saw material, respectively. When the type ofprocessing was considered, the BOD5 loading per ton of raw material from pineapple canning, fruitcanning, milk and coffee productions were 204, 335, 156, 39 and 84 kg.BOD5/day, respectivelyor 0.54, 10.52,2.44,0.61, 1.31 kg.BOD5 /ton of raw material, respectively due to the washing stepand type of fruit. It could be concluded that the wastewater from fruit canning processingcontained the highest impurities where as those from the milk processing contained the lowestimpurities. For the wastewater determination the removaI efficiencies for BOD5, COD, and SSwere higher than 90% and 70% for TKN. The impurities as BOD5, COD, TKN and SS were dischargedto the environment as 6,28,5 and 8 kg/d , respectively or 0.01,0.05,0.01 and 0.02 kg BOD5 /ton of rawmaterial, respectivelyThe sustainable environmental problem solving were reduction of both quality andquantity of wastewater. There are several way to reduce qualitative and quantitative of thewastewater by improving of the processing technique such as washing process and container.And the type and quality of raw material was also used to reduction of the quality of wastewater.By using above technology, about 50% of water consumption could be reduced by recycle technique.designing of washing container and washing processes. By reducing of water consumption andrecycle oftreated wastewater, the water consumption was more than 50% reduction.
