Abstract:
The purpose of this classroom-based research study is to investigate designing andevaluating language support for a computer game to help the students play the gameeffectively and learn more English.The subjects in this experiment were 6 first-year students of the Departments ofInstrumentation and Materials Engineering and Electronics and TelecommunicationEngineering at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. The instruments usedfor data collection were video capture, observation sheet, and semi-structured interview.The game chosen was Football Championship Manager 4, a football manager simulationgame. When the students played the game, they used the support material. The supportmaterial was divided into three categories; namely vocabulary in the game, abbreviationsand vocabulary in instructions, each containing three types of scaffolding: explanation inThai, explanation in English, and examples of use or pictures. The researcher used a videocapture program to record the process that the students went through when playing thecomputer game and using the support material, and observed their behavior by using anobservation sheet. After finishing the game, the students had a semi-structured interviewwith the researcher.The findings of this research study revealed that the support material could help students toplay the game effectively and learn more English. They chose different types ofscaffolding: explanation in Thai, explanation in English, and examples or pictures.Suggestions and implications concerning how to prepare Computer Assisted Instructionmaterials and how to expand vocabulary are given.
