Synthesis and characterization of the biodegradable hydrogel of starch-g-polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol)
Abstract:
The interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels were synthesized by free
radical grafting and crosslinking reactions among acrylamide (AM), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA),
glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator in the presence
of cassava starch (St). These IPN hydrogels (St-g-PAM/PVA) were then characterized by FTIR,
DSC, TGA and SEM. The amounts of the St:PVA were optimized to obtain the best
composition. The results indicate that the 50%St-PVA showed the highest %mass swelling of
1080%. The morphological study showed many pores and nooks on the surface of hydrogels.
These pores and irregularities would be beneficial for adsorbate of the dye molecules.
