Abstract:
Macca charcoal produced from carbonization of macadamia nut shells can generate
Far-infrared rays (FIR) when it is stimulated by heating. The FIR is an electromagnetic
radiation with wavelengths between 15-1,000 um. Due to its high penetrating efficiency about
4-5 cm, it may apply to improve the efficiency in a drying process of natural rubber (NR).
The rubber sample was prepared by the conventional method as a commercial rubber
production. The effect of FIR from Macca carbon on the drying time and physical properties
was investigated. The rubber dried under Macca carbon exhibited favorable results in the
reduction of time and energy consumption in the drying process and better rubber properties,
such as light color and low Mooney viscosity; hence, higher commercial value, comparing to
the non-FIR drying process as well as commercial graded rubbers. Additionally, the other
physical properties of the rubber were maintained.
