Fiber-spinning extrusion of porous polyolefin tapes
Abstract:
This work aims to produce porous film tapes that would have provided ventilationproperties by using a stretching technique via the extrusion process. The adjustedparameters were draw ratio, draw temperature, strain rate and the feed compositions. The experiments were divided into two main parts; these are inline stretching andoffline stretching. The extruders used were the blown film extruder at Thai FormosaPlastic Industry Company and the bench-scale blown film extruder at SilpakomUniversity. The characteristics of the tapes studied were tensile strength, airpermeability and morphology. For inline stretching runs at the company, the yield stressof the tapes was higher when using a higher draw ratio but these tapes were more brittlethan the original ones. In addition, at the same draw ratio, a higher hot plate temperaturewould result in stronger tapes than at the lower temperatures. The tapes withoutstretching were also used to study the properties by performing offline stretching. Theseresults showed that, increasing strain rate will result in an increase in yield stress. Fromthe morphology studies of the tapes, there were no voids on the tapes. The film samplescontaining 5 wt percent, 10 wt percent, 15 wt percent and 20 wt percent CaC03masterbatch which produced by the bench-scale extruder, had lower yield stress andstrain than the film without CaC03. In contrast, the extension at break increased whenadding CaC03 due to the present of LDPE in the filler masterbatch. However, at aloading of 20 wt percent CaC03 masterbatch, the effect of stress concentrator becamesignificant and resulted in a lower the yield stress and elongation at break. Comparingthe properties of the film with different strain rates (250 to 500 mm/min), the yieldstress increased but the elongation at break and maximum draw ratio decreased. Theresults of tensile test of the offline stretching experiment show that the lower the drawratio of the film, the longer the elongation and lower the yield stress. From SEMphotograph of the film containing CaC03 at different draw ratios and cross head speeds, the voids are rarely observed on the surface of the specimens. Manual measurement ofthe particle size distribution of CaC03 on the matrix found that the average particle sizewas around 2.0-2.7 micron and void size increased linearly with the draw ratio. For theair permeability test, it can be concluded that the films were non-breathable.
