Fog formation over Donmuang air force base during winter
Abstract:
Generally, fog mostly takes place at Donmuang Air Force Base (AFB) in winter, hindering the military airplane that maneuver over the air field. The observing ofmeteorological elements such as temperature, dew-point temperature, wind direction andspeed, cloud cover and pressure around the regions before and during fog formation overDonmuang, can help to warning the pilots or airmen for avoiding the risk of aircraftaccident and loss in time for landing or taking off. This research has studied the method of predicting visibility over Donmuang AFB at0700 A.M. from meteorological observation elements at 01 OOA.M. and 0500 A.M. byusing multiple linear regression. The data are received from the Royal Thai Air Force(RTAF)'s weather station from January, February and December (2001-2003) and from theThai Meteorological Department (TMD)'s weather station (Bangkok International Airport)from ,January, February and December (1999-2003). The multiple linear regression gavethe statistical models at 0100 A.M. and 0500A.M. used for predicting the visibility at 0700A.M. including the probability of fog (visibility less than 1 km), poor visibility(1 krn to4.8 krn), and good visibility (over 4.8 km).In each case, two models were found: one containing all the available independentvariables, and one omitting the insignificant variables using the step-by step method. Aselection of the most appropriate model for each month is made. Both of the results from RTAF and TMD have shown that the forecasting models usingthe data at 0500 A.M. were better than those using data at 0100 A.M. for forcasting fog, poor and good visibility at 0700 A.M. Also, the TMD models are more accurate than theRTAF models in the same period of time.
