Abstract:
This research is focused on the design of an ammonium sulfate production plant fromphosphogypsum and the preliminary study of the economic cost evaluation of theammonium sulfate production. The Merseburg Process is modified and used to modelthe plant. The phosphogypsum is purified with water and then treated with ammoniumcarbonate solution to give slurry of calcium carbonate in ammonium sulfate solution inthe CSTR reactor. The ammonium carbonate solution is produced from the reaction ofammonium hydroxide solution and carbon dioxide in absorption tower. After theseparation of calcium carbonate, the ammonium sulfate solution is concentrated andcrystallized in the evaporative crystallizer.For the preliminary study of economic analysis, the suitable phosphogypsum feed rateto produce ammonium sulfate is 600 kmolh (103,308 kgh). For this design, thepayback period is about 4,43years, the net present value (NPV) is US$ 66.62 millionafter 10-years operation and the internal rate of return is 26.25 percent. This plant canrecover the fixed capital investment in 4.43 years after the starting up if the interest rateis below 10 percent.
