Abstract:
This paper presents parametric study of the rectangular microstrip antenna with an air gap. The air gap is inserted between the dielectric substrate and the ground plane for obtaining a larger bandwidth than a conventional antenna. The closed from expression are proposed to calculate the resonant frequency, input impedance, and bandwidth of the antenna. The calculated results based on the closed forms are compared with experimental results and very good agreements are achieved. From experiments, it is found that the resonant frequency and the bandwidth increase while the air gap thickness is increased. In addition, the bandwidth increases while the radio between the total thickness and the free space wavelength is increased
