Abstract:
The objective of this research is to study a generating mechanism of serpentine gait of our snake robot Serpentine 11. A potential field has been implemented such that the serpentine I1 can avoid obstacles. Ability in avoiding obstacles is an important component in mobility towards practical uses. This type of snake robots will be able to explore hostile, unstructuredenvironment with lots of debris such as the incident of the World Trade Center (WTC).Our study is focused on dynamic behavior of serpentine motion using the Kane's method. The snake motion is classified as nonholonomic and ho1onomic motion. Mathematical equations and related constraints are derived. Using the potential field concepts with kinematicequation, that is able to control its orientations and moving speeds. Simulation results showed that the snake robot was able to reach the goal and avoid the obstacles. In our experiments, the modified serpeniod function is applied to control our snake robot mavins in circular paths. Finally, the proposed steering concept is able to control the heading direction of snake movement.
