Abstract: KO Khao (Castanopsis indica) is a tree species that is widely used as agrowth substrate for shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) cultivation, especially innorthern and northeastern Thailand. An increase in demand for this mushroom hasresulted in a high cutting rate without concern for the long-term effects on theC. indica. population. Therefore, factors that affect C. indicu seedling survival andgrowth rate were studied in order to provide knowledge for restoration andmanagement of this species. The study was conducted in the community forests ofBan Bor Muang Noi, Ban Huay Nam Pak and Nahaeo Nationnal Park, AmphurNahaeo, Loei province. The sample plots in both community forests were centeredaround C. indicu trees with cut branches and compared with C. indica trees in theNational Park, which were not cut. The park also had less human disturbance.Growth and survival data were collected every two months (beginning in Novemberof 1998). During this period, the effects of fire, light availability (canopy cover) andground vegetation cover on the growth rate and survival of C. indica seedlings wereexamined.The results indicated that fire was the main factor that effected seedlinggrowth and survival. The taller (older) seedlings tended to have a higher percentsurvival than the shorter (younger) individuals. The seedlings that survived the firesand re-sprouted, had lower growth rates than the seedlings that were not burnedduring 6 and 12 months after the fires. However, 18 months after the fire seedlinggrowth rates in the burned plots and unburned plots were not significantly different.In general, slightly higher growth rates occurred during the rainy season, but most ofthe effect appeared to be due to fire. The dry season also effected seedling ,survival,especially in the unburned community forest. Light availability in terms of canopyopenness directly above the seedling was not correlated with seedling survival, butwas positively correlated with growth rate. Canopy cover averaged at the plot levelwas not correlated with seedling growth rate and survival. Ground vegetation coverwas positively correlated with simple seedling growth rates (although not withrelative growth rate), but was not correlated with seedling survival.
