Effects of the family preparation for labour support program on families perceived self-efficacy in their labour support and parturients satisfaction with their familys labour support
Abstract:
Childbirth is a phenomenon that results in anxiety and fear. As such, labor support is importance. The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to determine effects of the family preparation for labor support program on families perceived self-efficacy in their labor support and parturients satisfaction with their familys support during childbirth. A convenience sampling was used to recruit a sample of 64 dyads of pregnant women and their family receiving antenatal care and giving birth at Buddhasothorn hospital. The sample of 32 dyads was randomly assigned into the control group receiving usual nursing care, and the other of 32 dyads into the experimental group receiving the family preparation for labor support program plus usual nursing care. Data collection was carried out from November 2015 to April 2016 The research instruments included the family preparation for labor support program, a demographic questionnaire, the questionnaires of families perceived self-efficacy in their labor support and parturients satisfaction with their familys support. Their internal consistency reliabilities were .94 and .92, respectively. Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, standard deviation, and t-test. Results showed that after receiving the program, family in the experimental group had a mean score of families perceived self-efficacy in their labor support significantly higher than before receiving the program, and significantly higher than those in the control group (t 31= 5.44, p < .01 and t 62=-4.99, p= < .01, respectively). Moreover, a mean score of parturients satisfaction with their familys labor support in the experimental group was significantly higher than those in the control group (t 62= -2.07, p = .04). These findings indicate that the family preparation for labor support program is effective. Midwifes and nurses in the labor room should apply this program in the practice of midwifery. In addition, positive outcomes would be gained to the parturients and their family.
