Relationships between knowledge, attitude, perceived self-efficacy and childhood fever management among parents of children patients at referral hospital in Bhutan
Abstract:
Fever is one of the most common symptom of illness in children. It causes significant worry and concern for parents, and often inappropriately managed. The purposes of this study were to examine parents childhood fever management and determine relationships between parents knowledge, attitude, perceived self-efficacy and childhood fever management among parents in Bhutan. A convenience sampling was used to recruit the sample of 80 Bhutanese parents with compliant of fever in their children and have visited outpatient department of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, Bhutan. Research instruments included, a demographic record form, the parents fever management questionnaire, the parents knowledge, the parents attitude questionnaire, and the parents self-efficacy scale. Their reliabilities of questionnaires were .79, .71, .88, and .86 respectively. Data were collected from March to April 2017, and were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results revealed that overall mean score of parents childhood fever management was 39.51 (SD = 5.59). There were significantly positive relationships between parents knowledge, attitude, perceived self-efficacy and parents childhood fever management (r = .28, r = .24 and r = .24, p < .05 respectively). These findings indicate that healthcare providers, especially nurses could utilize to develop an intervention or program to improve parents childhood fever management by focusing on increasing knowledge, attitude and perceived selfefficacy among Bhutanese parents.
