Abstract: This paper mentions to the first fundamental theorem and the development of the basicproperties of meromorphic functions related to their characteristic function. It is shownthat T(r, f ) is an increasing convex function of logr . Moreover, a modified formTo (r, f ) of the characteristic function due to Ahlfors-Shimizu is described. The purposeof the proof of the first fundamental theorem is to give a geometrical interpretation ofthe Ahlfors-Shimizu characteristic. Finally some applications of the proximity functionof the logarithmic derivative are described and an interesting theorem called the Borel-Caratheodory Theorem is proved. This theorem describes the structure of entirefunctions without zeros which have finite order.
