Predictability of the Northeast Asia Monsoon by the Shallow Water Model
Abstract:
Weather predictions by atmospheric models always contain uncertainties of initial
conditions and model formulations. Predictability of a model can be considered as
sensitivity of the model to initial conditions. Five existing predictability measurement;
Lyapunov exponent, finite size Lyapunov exponent, finite time Lyapunov exponent,
local Lyapunov exponent and largest Lyapunov exponent, together with a new method
called supremum Lyapunov exponent (SLE), are used to measure predictability of the
northeast asia monsoon (winter monsoon) by a shallow water model. The shallow water
model called Single Level Primitive Equation model (SILEPE) is used to downscale 2
cases of winter monsoon predictions obtained from the global climate model,
BCCR_BCM2.0. The predictability measurement by SLE is consistent with most of the
other methods and indicates that predictability of the winter monsoon by SILEPE
depends on resolution of the model. The higher the resolution, the longer the
predictability, with the maximum predictability of about 3 days. To further test the
performance of SLE, predictability of 2 long-range forecasts by another global climate
model, EdGCM, are measured with all 6 predictability measurement methods. The
results also show that the predictability as measured by SLE is compatible with the
other measurement methods.
