Project-Based Learning : Perceptions of Instructors and Students in Vocational Education Institutes in Thailand
Abstract:
This research analyzes and compares instructors' and students' perceptions of factors
that contribute to the effective use of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in vocational
education institutes in Thailand. The sample used in this study comprised 247 electrical
technology instructors and 161 vocational education students. The data were analyzed
using factor analysis, structural equation modeling with LISREL TM and t-test. This
research identified that when the factors were ranked in terms of importance as
perceived by instructors and students the order was as follows: Instructors: Thinking
Skills (0.96), Intelligent Awareness (0.93), Sharing Ideas (0.85), Motivation to Learn
(0.81), and Scientific Process (0.81), and Students: Motivation to Learn (0.92), Thinking
Skills (0.85), Scientific Process (0.82), Sharing Ideas (0.81), and Goal-Setting (0.77).
The results had highly satisfactory validity and fit the empirical data. They indicated
that both instructors and students agreed on the importance of two factors: Motivation to
Learn and Scientific Process. Students (M= 5.69, SD = 0.74 and M= 5.62, SD = 0.83)
were significantly more likely to value Sharing Ideas and Thinking Skills than
instructors (M = 5.33, SD = 0.96 and M = 5.29, SD = 0.97) in PBL (t = -3.58, and
t = -3.01) at .01 level, respectively.
